Espers - Greg Weeks and Meg Baird's Ode to Brit Folk Futures

Conjuring up spirits from Fairport Convention, Donovan and The Incredible String Band, Espers' sound wafts across time, like a soft whiff of incense carrying on still from that cusp of the 1960s folding into the 1970s and set free into the 2000s. The eponymous debut was originally released in 2003. The Weed Tree, an album of covers with one original tune, followed in 2005. Both original lp releases have climbed in value, making the Drag City recent reissues a budget minded record lovers respite.

If you are unfamiliar, Greg Weeks' intricate guitar and Meg Bairds' (also of Heron Oblivion, a Record Booth 93 fave) lulling alto mine gloom and beauty. Covers on The Weed Tree, ranging from traditional folk like Rosemary Lane to hard rockers Blue Oyster Cult's Flaming Telepaths, are fitted out in sorrowful delicacy. Freak folk for difficult times. And they are all difficult. Beauty just makes them seem easier as we hope and cope along.

Definitely Check out Heron Oblivion as well. LPs available at Record Booth 93 in Burlington NC inside Granddaddy's Antiques Mall 2316 Maple Ave. If you don't see them in the bins, leave us a note and we will get a copy for you for as long as they are available.
